About Amy

A Word for prospective students of the violin or piano

Learning to play a musical instrument is not easy, especially if you take the time to find a good teacher and learn the right way.

Many teachers let their students slip through the cracks by not teaching correct form, intonation, vibrato, or how to practice well.

So make sure you look for a teacher with integrity, preferably a degree in music, and a track record of success—not just the cheapest or closest.

Learning incorrectly will limit your enjoyment, slow your progress, never allowing you to achieve your full potential, and can even lead to injury.

A teacher with true passion for the success of her students

Amy started violin at ago 5 and piano at 7, winning her first competition by age 11. She performed in local youth orchestras, sang in choirs, played in ensembles, competed in ensemble, and played chamber music for years with her first violin and piano teachers.

Amy received excellent grades in music theory, ear training and sight singing, and eventually received full music scholarships at college, university, and graduate school for her excellence in music.

Amy received many honors and scholarships in violin and piano, along with completing all levels of Certificate of Merit (“CM”)—a rigorous music performance, theory, and ear-training examination, from age 9-16, including Panel, in violin and piano.

Amy received her manga cum laude masters degree in music with emphasis is violin performance in 2004. She studied with students of the late Dorothy DeLay–Juliard, James Buswell–New England Conservatory, and Kathleen Winkler–Rice University. So she has a strong Galamian school background. Her violin teachers were Dr. Jonathan Swartz, Connie Heard, Bill Fitzpatrick, Peter Marsh, Merrilee Walker, and Irene Peterson.

More about what I believe as a teacher:
Amy believes in being a mentor and guide, and will teach you to get the most out of practicing each week. She expects a lot from her students, but wants music should be a joy filled experience. Without undue pressure, Amy will guide and challenge you to be your best.

Amy will teach you correctly from the start and believes that any student can play well and enjoy music with the right coaching, as long as you are willing to put in the daily time and effort.
